African Photographic Safaris and Photography Workshops

Photo Workshop, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Location and Description

Oregon Coast and Redwoods

The southern coast of Oregon is a photographically rich destination, and what I love about the area is how each day has different weather all along the coast and down into Northern California. We will be based in Bandon, Oregon and if conditions are good we will include majestic redwoods into the mix.

Great Migration with the Guiding Dream Team

This is our most exciting safari to announce and guide, because we have assembled the Dream Team of guides for the absolute best safari experience possible. This safari will combine low vehicle density in the Mara Triangle, the best guides in Kenya and two photographic leaders to ensure your photographic success. Sold out.

Africa Through The Lens, A Small Group Photo Safari

Paul Joynson-Hicks will be guiding a small group, limited to only 5 people, out on the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania. Paul is a wonderful instructor and guide, and he will get you in the right position for you to take your best shots. The group size is limited to only 5 people, so this is a safari that shouldn't be missed.

Scotland Isles Trilogy

Scotland's Isles of Skye, Lewis and Haris are dramatic islands off of the west coast of Scotland. We will have  extremes: craggy rocks that merge with the sea and highlands with steep cliffs, as well as spires that rise above the surrounding land and sea. We also have an optional pre-workshop trip to Cairngorms National park for those who wish to include the potential for fall color. Sponsored by Phase One.

Botswana: The Premier Wildlife Safari

Come and join Grant and Andy in Botswana, during the time when babies are born, when predation is high, when the light is most dramatic and when migrant birds are at their peak. This is our favorite time to be in the Okavango Delta, and we would love to guide you on a trip that has the best of everything: wildlife, creature comforts, private game drives and off-road driving. Only 2 spaces available, due to a cancellation.

Custom Safaris

Custom Safaris

If you have looked at the above safari schedule, and none of the dates or locations work for you, please know that I often setup custom safaris in these situations. I can often arrange for a professional photographer to lead you or your group, or if you would rather go on safari without a specialist guide I can easily assist in setting this up. I have a large network of safari providers, and can act as your agent on an exciting safari.

Frequently Asked Questions

Interested in going on a photographic safari?

Have you dreamed of taking the ultimate photography trip, by going on an African safari, to visit the countless and varied wildlife, combined with vivid landscapes? If asked, most photographers would tell you that an African photo safari would be their dream destination for their photographic interests. African safaris allow you to experience the wildlife up close and in their own element. I was very surprised when I first went to the Serengeti and saw just how many varieties of wildlife there are to photograph. The quantity and quality of subjects to photograph while on safari make for the richest photography on the planet. Now is the time to visit Africa.

But what if you want to go, but know absolutely *nothing* about what safari options are available? Well, here is a primer that will hopefully answer those first questions.

Why go on a photographic safari?

These classic African safaris will feature all the stunning wildlife viewing opportunities that Africa has to offer, with one special bonus: you will be traveling in the company of a professional photographer. Suitable for all levels of photographic experience, these safaris will encourage you to ask questions, try out different techniques, experiment with dramatic lighting and learn from not only your leader, but from other members of your group.

One of our experienced naturalist guides will take you, and photographer Andy Biggs, to explore the most beautiful safari destinations in Africa. We will travel by Land Rover and private planes and we will spend each night in comfortable safari camps. This will allow us to relax and savor our beautiful surroundings, but it will also afford us the ability to clean or recharge our gear as we go. The instruction will be casual and flexible taking into account everyone’s level of skill and bearing in mind that Africa and its wildlife are by definition wild and unpredictable!

What makes a photographic safari different from other safaris?

Our photographer’s safari features…
* Input, suggestions and informal instruction on anything related to photography
* Casual talks, briefings or workshops appropriate to each day’s activities
* Flexible instruction topics to suit photographers of any skill level
* A maximum of 1 photographer per row, ensuring adequate room for your gear
* Luxury accommodations in safari lodges (each with full amenities, allowing you to safely store, recharge, clean and maintain your equipment)
* Pacing that will suit everyone’s photographic needs
* An environment conducive to learning from one another—no question is off limits, no inquiry too basic
* A pre departure packet with safari advice as well as film and equipment recommendations
* Destinations to the most scenic places, with the most abundant wildlife!

When are your trips?

Scroll above for an up-to-date listing of departure dates.

What if these dates don't work for me, or perhaps I am interested in a private safari?

If you are looking at different dates, or if you are looking for a private safari, I can also assit you. I do understand that not all safaris work for everybody's timeframe or specific needs. With this in mind, I can book a private safari for you with the same amenities, guides and vehicles that I use for the safaris that I lead. Your schedule. Your specific itinerary. Your private group. I have access to the best guides, and they have worked with me extensively in the past, and know what photographers need from a safari.

What are your accommodations like?

We have three main types of accommodations on our trips: Game lodges, semi-permanent tented camps and luxury 'Classic' camps. All of our accommodations are clean, comfortable and privide private en suite bathroom facilities. On our luxury Classic camp locations, each private tent comes with beds with down comforters, private restroom facilities and a pull chain hot shower. All camping is extremely safe, and our guides and camp staff are there to please. We even have cold wine and beer available out in the bush. All of our digital camera electrical needs are handled, as we have a custom made tent for recharging our laptops, cameras and iPads. On our semi-permanent and game lodge safaris the accommodations always exceed expectations with private wooden decks for mid-day relaxation, indoor and private outdoor showers (your choice!), plenty of room for unpacking, a writing desk and of course beds you would love to have in your own home.
